Did you know that on those kinds of reels there's a little hole you can thread the braided fishing line through so you can tie it in the center before you wind it up.

hello Ben i just picked up a tern 500 star drag i think its the early model trying to get some specs on the reel for braid capacity i'm looking to put on 65 hollow core 16 strand at 34mm

The 300 valiant appealed to me because it's under 10oz. I know it's weird but I'm from the pacific northwest and i've used abu baitcast reels drifting on the rivers...but i find them under powered for the 30+ pound chinook salmon in the fall (the maingear bends at times). Sooo..I saw the valiant 300 in a store and it looked amazing and small...so i just was hoping i could drift/free spool with it...but with no adjustment it could be a problem float fishing....thoughts? i'd reely like a beefier baitcaster...and valiant is gorgeous.

At last!! I have 7 bx 400/500 in my fishing 'family' (friends) all of which have had the AR bearings fail.The addition of those rubber washers is long overdue! Despite regular cleaning (& applying grease externally) capillary action sucks water in from the handle side to the AR, eventually destroying it. The early reels had a very sml o ring on the drive shaft but this did little to stop the water. Many years ago i made a tool out of some threaded studding for winding the old bearings out and winding new ones in. This has worked fine but the rubber washers will hopefully eliviate the water ingress. Can i fit these to my single speed reels and would i need different size bushings??

I told the brick and mortar guy I try to frequent to order me a reel. I wanted a left handed Accurate reel and thought the Valiant might do the trick. Well looking at my 50% deposit slip it looks like I’m getting the 30 and not the 40 I thought I had orders. Things will work out and I’m sure the knucklehead I ordered from will make it right even though I may be the one who wasn’t clear. I’m gonna be under gunned when it comes to catching a football. Well I got that Accurate reel I’ve been waiting for.

Great tutorial but I always put a little bit of mono backing on mine so it can break off if necessary if the fish is to big and not mess the reel up

What size would you recommend for 20-25 lb set up?

My experience is using a longer leader is better for body chaffing or if they tail wrap. Seen many lose fish with shorty leaders. I go 6 foot of 200 mono. Jmo

I haven’t had a chance to fish my tern 2 400, but my first impression is that the free spool out of the box wouldn’t be great for fly lining a sardine without taking out the cast control. I’m also disappointed that the clamp won’t work on my modern rods because it doesn’t clear the gear box and nuts are too small in length to secure.

I do like this knot, but it does drive me creasy when it is sliper on the leader when trying thigh it !!!

I assume you had a second Bimini on the wind on leader to create the loop of the wind on leader. Is that correct? So you have a Bimini knot cats paw followed by a second Bimini knot and all of these easily pass thru the guides and onto the reel?

When you fight the fish on the accurate tern 2s is the limiter there drag or line capacity? I like smaller profile reels so was wondering if a tern2 500xn spooled with pe5 silk ocean braid that would get about 400 yards of 83 pound line would be capable of handling 80-150 grade foamers?are the drags on the turns truly as they say and do they hold up over many fish. I plan to put it to work and wonder if the drag would really start to slip after a few biggies? Although the reels would manly be up against normal grade 30-60bft/yft.

Which model would you recommend as a jig stick for yellowtail as well as the capability to fish foamers 50-150 grade? I would probably use silk ocean braid as it is has the same diameter of 65 pound pp but is rated for 90 pounds. It’s been hard trying to find a reel that can cast well, small profile, and built like a tank. Probably will pare with Phenix axis 909hj.
